Manchester United are undoubtedly one of the biggest football clubs in the world, but they do make some strange transfer decisions at times.
The Red Devils have just signed Wout Weghorst on loan from Burnley, they’ve previously brought Odion Ighalo in on loan, and now, they’re looking at a player from Fulham who can barely get a game at Craven Cottage.
Indeed, according to TuttoMercatoWeb, Erik Ten Hag’s side are looking at Kevin Mbabu.
Mbabu only joined Fulham in the summer, but he’s already firmly out of favour at Craven Cottage.
He’s the Whites’ third-choice right-back at this moment in time behind both Kenny Tete and Bobby Decordova-Reid, and with Cedric Soares seemingly being targeted by Fulham, Mbabu is about to slip even further down the pecking order.
It’s difficult to decipher why Mbabu is being frozen out at Fulham. He hasn’t made a matchday squad in months at this point – not even in the FA Cup, and Marco Silva hasn’t mentioned him by name when asked about the right-back situation in any of his recent press conferences.
Yes, Mbabu has been poor when he has played for Fulham, but this sort of treatment is usually reserved for a disruptive player rather than just an underperforming one.
So, why do Manchester United want him? Well, it’s hard to really figure that out.
The Red Devils are absolutely fine for depth at right-back right now after the resurgence of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot, and Mbabu just isn’t up to the standard that they need.
With that being said, Mbabu has played Champions League football with Wolfsburg in the past, so he does have some semblance of quality about him, but, in all honesty, he doesn’t look suited to Premier League football one bit.
Let’s see if United progress with this interest, because this could be one of the strangest transfers we see this month.
