Merson backs Manchester United to beat Tottenham, because they cannot afford to lose.

After their long haul trip to Ukraine, Manchester United face a quick turnaround ahead of their Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur this weekend.

It is a huge game for both sides but United are under the most pressure, heading into the match six points behind Tottenham who are in fifth place.

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson says he can only see one winner from Sunday’s match at Old Trafford, and expects Manchester United to run out easy winners.

He told SkySports he predicts the Red Devils to win 3-1, because they cannot afford to lose the match and fall further behind Spurs.

Merson said: “They can’t allow that gap to grow to nine. I think they’re playing well enough at the moment and creating chances, and before Marouane Fellaini came on against Everton, it was a very Jose Mourinho performance at Goodison.

“It’s how they turn those draws into wins, but I’m backing them to figure it out against Tottenham.”

It will be difficult for United against a Tottenham side who have only lost one Premier League game all season, and have bounced back from their mini slump to win their last two matches.

United have drawn their last three Premier League matches at Old Trafford, and also let three points slip from their grasp in their match away to Everton last Sunday.

To then factor in the travelling from Thursday’s Europa League game in contrast to Spurs who played at Wembley in the week, and a straightforward win for United as Merson predicts looks a tough ask.
