With the January transfer window now open, Manchester United have been linked with a number of moves this month. As the club fights for a top four finish, many United fans are hoping Jose Mourinho will look to strengthen his side, and splash the kind of cash United fans enjoyed watching being spent in the summer. With this in mind, we’ve decided to take a look at some of the realistic, speculative and ridiculous names being linked with a move to Old Trafford this month.

The Realistic
After looking particularly shaky at the back at times this season, it’s been no surprise to see Manchester United being linked with moves for defenders this year. Eric Bailly, who has quickly won plaudits amongst United fans, has impressed at the back, but the constant changes to the defence since his injury have meant an addition in that area is likely, even if things have tightened up recently under Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo. Rumours of a move for Benfica defender Vincent Lindelof won’t go away (Independent), and it wouldn’t be much of a surprise to see United reinforce their defence in this January window.

The Speculative
With Mourinho’s multi-million pound signings now slowing coming to fruition, the Portuguese manager has again shown that when he spends big, he gets quality, and with his team arguably needing a bit more attacking threat from midfield, it’s been no surprise to see United linked with another big money move. After being linked by the Mirror with a £50million swoop for Real Madrid’s attacking midfielder James Rodriguez, it really is anyone’s guess as to whether United will go big once again in this transfer window.

The Ridiculous
With Manchester United, you can always guarantee in every transfer window that there’s going to be plenty of daft links and crazy transfer gossip. As the richest and arguably the biggest club in the world, Manchester United find themselves linked with moves with players almost every week, and it’s no wonder United fans sometimes have a hard time separating the realistic from the down-right bonkers.
In December, it was reported in the Mirror that West Ham midfielder, Reece Oxford had snubbed a move to Old Trafford, despite not being able to force his way into the West Ham side. Another report by the Express also linked United with a mouth-watering £80million move for Tottenham Hotspur forward, Harry Kane, despite the club having the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Wayne Rooney, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial already on their books. Both players have since signed new contracts at their respective teams.
