Manchester United’s summer rebuild is only just getting started, and Ineos are looking to add more players even after the arrival of Matheus Cunha.

Last season was one to forget for Man United, ending in a record-low finish in the Premier League and leaving the club with plenty of work to do.

Ineos are now preparing for a crucial summer, with plans to make at least four key signings to help turn things around — though more arrivals could depend on player sales.

Ineos clearly have their hands full, but so far, Cunha is the only first-team addition completed. That said, work is ongoing behind the scenes to land two more, with several other positions also under review.

Centre-forward is the main focus at the moment, but Ruben Amorim and the club’s recruitment team are also looking at options in midfield, wing-back, and between the sticks.

Scouts have also been sent to Slovakia to watch the U21 European Championships, where one Portuguese youngster in particular is drawing attention.

Roger Fernandes remains on Manchester United’s radar despite shift in priorities

The search for new attacking midfielders has pushed the right wing-back search down the list of priorities. But earlier this year, Geovany Quenda was a leading target before he chose Chelsea, leading United to explore alternatives.

One of those alternatives was Roger Fernandes, the Braga prospect who many see as a very similar profile — just a year older.

According to information passed to United in Focus by Graeme Bailey, Fernandes is still under consideration, even as other priorities emerge.

“We understand that United like Fernandes a lot and believe that he would be a good fit into the Ruben Amorim system, which means United have been keeping tabs on him over in Slovakia.

“As Fernandes plays for Portugal U21 in the European Championship, United are following him closely; however, there are doubts around whether a wing-back is on the cards this summer.”

Bailey adds, “Things have changed at United, with their targets indicating Amad will be played as a right wing-back from this point forward, and in that case, I don’t think Fernandes can be seen as a priority. However, United are doing options and still like him, while the fact that he can play in a number of positions also appeals.”

This year’s tournament has plenty of attacking talent on display for Portugal, with both Quenda and Fernandes showing their quality out wide.

In the 5-0 win over Poland, Fernandes assisted two goals while Quenda grabbed a brace and an assist of his own. Both stood out, but it was a particularly important performance for Fernandes, who also came off an impressive season at Braga.

He only played 45 minutes in that match but made a real impact, operating from the left wing — another reminder of his versatility and ability to play across multiple roles.
