Manchester United reportedly want to sign Memphis Depay despite rumoured interest from Arsenal and Tottenham as well as the Red Devils selling the attacker back in 2017.

According to Sport, the Premier League giants will look to sign Depay in the January transfer window following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, with United keen on bringing the Dutch international back to Old Trafford as a short-term solution to their striker issues.

As per the report, FC Barcelona are keen to offload Depay in January after the 2022 FIFA World Cup, with the La Liga side eager to free up some space on the wage bill and to recoup some form of revenue from the transfer market, with the 28-year-old the ideal player to sell.

Sport have previously claimed that £17m will be enough to convince Barcelona to sell Depay, yet for United, many other top sides are interested in the attacker, namely Arsenal and Tottenham as reported by Sport and 90min respectively.

With United having the biggest case of signing a top striker in January, a move for Depay would make sense for Erik Ten Hag’s side despite the club selling the Dutchman to Olympique Lyonnais five years ago, with the Dutch coach likely a unique selling point for the attacker.

Indeed, whilst it might be quite a surprise for many to see Depay sign for United over the likes of Arsenal or Tottenham, the Manchester giants could be tempted to make such a move in the coming weeks given that they need a top striker to lead the line for the second half of the season.

Depay’s history with United is messy, to say the least. But a new era feels to be on the horizon for the Manchester side with the Glazer family in the midst of selling the club and the departure of Ronaldo feeling like a massive weight coming off the squad’s shoulders. And for the Barcelona attacker, returning to Old Trafford could be a wise move.

With Ronaldo gone, Depay could become a regular for United under Ten Hag, who could be the perfect coach for the 28-year-old given his style of managing and the tactics we have seen from the Red Devils, with the signing itself a potential coup for the Premier League giants despite interest from Arsenal and Tottenham.
