Manchester United are starting to look a lot more closely at their midfield options, with Ajax prospect Sean Steur now on their radar.
With no additions made during the January window, it looks like the club is planning to be far more active once the summer market opens.
Casemiro’s decision to leave at the end of the season has only added to the need for reinforcements, and several names have already been linked to Old Trafford as potential replacements.
While many of those links are focused on Premier League players like Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton, Manchester United’s scouting efforts are not limited to England.
Sean Steur draws interest from Manchester United

The Eredivisie is filled with promising young talent, though United’s track record in the Dutch market has been hit and miss.
Lisandro Martinez, who joined from Ajax in 2022 along with Erik ten Hag, stands out as a rare success story for the club.
On the other hand, deals for Andre Onana, Antony, and Memphis Depay have not quite worked out as hoped.
Recently, there have been links to AZ Alkmaar’s Kees Smith following comparisons to Frenkie de Jong.
Rio Ferdinand has publicly pushed for United to go after Smith this summer. But there is another midfielder catching eyes in the Dutch league.
TEAMtalk reports that Sean Steur is on the radar of several Premier League clubs, including the Red Devils.
Steur has fewer than a dozen senior starts so far, but United have still sent scouts over to watch him play live for Ajax.
Liverpool and Arsenal are both keeping tabs on him too. While Manchester City and Chelsea have reportedly been watching Steur longer than others.
Despite being under contract until 2028, Ajax will likely struggle to retain Steur if top English clubs pursue his signing.
Man Utd should not put all their eggs in one basket
Given the situation, it could be argued that United need more than one midfield addition in the summer window.
Losing Casemiro would come as a blow to any team, even though he is coming to the end of his career. That should not come as a surprise because United are still relying on the Brazilian veteran to start every match.
Steur is not going to be seen as an instant replacement for Casemiro, but he could help Michael Carrick – or whoever is head coach next season – by adding another talented midfield option.
Ineos want an experienced holding midfielder who can immediately slot into the starting XI, which explains why many of their targets already play in England’s top flight.
