Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney says that he is enjoying his role in Louis van Gaal’s 3-5-2 system.

Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney did not exactly have a bad season under David Moyes in 2013-14, but there is a lingering suspicion that he could have done more.

The Red Devils’ failure to finish in the top four of the Premier League and progress beyond the quarter-finals of the Champions League did put the England international’s performances under a different light.

Then came Rooney’s now-accustomed inability to step up his game for his national team, as the Three Lions were knocked out of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil after just two group-stage matches.

However, the 28-year-old appears to have regained his form and is enjoying himself under new United boss Louis van Gaal, especially in his role in the Dutchman’s 3-5-2 formation.

The former Everton youngster has scored four goals in his first three pre-season friendly matches, including twice each against Los Angeles Galaxy and AS Roma.

‘The system has been very good’, Goal.com quotes Rooney as saying. ‘Obviously the manager has come in and we have been training in a different system, but it’s great, even at my age, to learn something new and try and get better with the team…

‘In the system we have played in the first few games, I’ve enjoyed my role, so I’m looking forward to continuing and scoring goals which will hopefully help to make us successful’.

It will be crucial not just for Rooney but for all the United players to have a good pre-season and enhance their confidence heading into the new campaign.

However, one must remember that despite the presence of some famous teams such as Real Madrid at the International Champions Cup in the USA, it is still a ‘friendly tournament’ – the real test will come when the new Premier League campaign gets underway in two weeks’ time.
