Manchester United defender Luke Shaw was named on the bench last night in the Carabao Cup, missing out on a rare starting opportunity.
Shaw has not been in favour ever since Jose Mourinho took over, and the cup game against Swansea City was an opportunity for him to get his first start of the campaign, but he was left out once again.
This snub should give Newcastle United all the encouragement they need to make Shaw their number one transfer target in January.
Now with the club set to get a major cash boost from a reported takeover, a move for Shaw is more viable financially.
From a sporting perspective it is an excellent fit.
Shaw would get the chance to play regularly again for a club which has a need of reinforcements at left-back, in front of a passionate fan base who can help encourage him to get back to his best.
He would enjoy playing under a respected and defensive astute coach like Rafa Benitez, and a late shot at making the 2018 World Cup squad is not impossible if he ends the season strongly.
Shaw, 22, went to the last World Cup with England but injuries and a lack of confidence have halted his progress.
A move to Newcastle may be perfect for all parties, and last night only reinforced the view that his future does not lie at Old Trafford.
