Dean Saunders thinks any of the top six would be lucky to have the Black Cats striker.

Manchester United should sign Jermain Defoe from Sunderland this summer despite the fact the striker will be 35 in October.

That is according to former Liverpool striker and pundit, Dean Saunders, who believes that Defoe would be a good fit for any of the current Premier League top six.

“If I was a manager in the top six, any of the top six, I’d sign him,” Saunders said on BT Sport Score.

“Even if he’s on the bench for Man United, you’re bringing him on, he scores goals.

“He knows how to do it and you can’t find players like that.

“He’s 35 [he is actually 34], he looks after himself and age is just a number.”

The Independent reported that Defoe is free to leave the Stadium Of Light at the end of the season should the Black Cats be relegated – a situation that is looking increasingly likely with them rock bottom and eight points from safety.

While the club have struggled, the veteran forward has been receiving plenty of plaudits after scoring 14 league goals.

Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane is the only Englishman with more and that is why Gareth Southgate recalled Defoe into an England squad for the first time in over three-and-a-half years for recent matches with Germany and Lithuania.

The Sunderland attacker scored the opener in the World Cup qualifier against the Lithuanians as he continues to build his reputation in the latter years of his career.
