Newcastle United looked into appointing manager Rudi Garcia after their takeover, but he could now be on his way to Manchester United.
The National’s Andy Mitten reports that Garcia has now been interviewed by United.
Garcia is in contention to become United’s interim boss for the rest of the season after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking.
United seem content to bring in a new man just until next summer before making a big managerial move.
Ernesto Valverde is another name in the frame for that kind of role, with Garcia a new target.
The 57-year-old built up a strong reputation in France, impressing in charge of Dijon, Le Mans and Lille, winning the Ligue 1 title with the latter in 2011.
Garcia moved to Italy with Roma, then back to France with Marseille and Lyon.
Out of work since May earlier this year, Garcia boasts a win rate of over 48% and will now hope for a big move to Manchester United.

Newcastle thought about Garcia move
The Daily Mail reported in October that Newcastle had thought about a move to appoint Garcia.
Amid claims that Unai Emery would cost £7million and Roberto Martinez around £2million, Newcastle looked into the out-of-work Garcia.
Newcastle ended up going for Eddie Howe instead, but Garcia could still find his way to England.
Newcastle will feel confident that they got their man for the future in Howe, but seeing Garcia walk into the Manchester United job would be quite the shock for PIF.
