Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool and Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United both are interested in signing Frenkie de Jong, and it seems that the Red Devils are really stepping up their effort to secure the services of the Barcelona midfielder.
Sport reported in February 2022 that Liverpool are keen on signing De Jong from Barcelona in the summer transfer window.
However, it now seems that it is Liverpool’s bitter rivals Manchester United who are really desperate for him.
We covered a report from Oriol Domènech on Saturday claiming that new United manager Erik ten Hag has had phone calls with his Dutch compatriot De Jong.
And now The Daily Star are reporting that United are wiling to make the Netherlands international the highest paid player at the club.
The Red Devils are reportedly willing to pay £395,000 per week as salary to De Jong, who is available for €80 million (£68 million), according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Liverpool should not match Manchester United’s Frenkie de Jong offer
In our view, Liverpool should not match Manchester United’s salary-offer to Frenkie de Jong.
It is simply too much.
Liverpool have a certain wage structure, and there is no point in breaking it for a 25-year-old midfielder who has not had the best of times since leaving Ajax for Barcelona in 2019.
Of course, we know that De Jong is a very good player who is still only 25.
We also think that the midfielder would make Liverpool better in the middle of the park.
However, we do not think that Liverpool should pay close to £400,000 per week to De Jong.
