How did Manchester United’s players fare in their 1-1 Champions League draw with Bayern Munich? Here are the ratings for David Moyes’ side…
David de Gea 7 – Another good game from the Spaniard, who made a number of decent saves but no more impressive than when he made a superb stop to keep out Arjen Robben’s curling strike in the first half.
Phil Jones 7 – Performed admirably first at right back up against Franck Ribery, and then as a makeshift left back against Arjen Robben after Alex Buttner was taken off injured.
Rio Ferdinand 7 – Was able to outmuscle Thomas Muller in the Bayern attack and was generally solid throughout despite the pace and movement of the German’s attack.
Nemanja Vidic 8 – Dominated in the air and made a number of important blocks before coming up with a stunning header to put United in front in what could have been his final Champions League game at Old Trafford.
Alex Buttner 7 – Didn’t offer a huge amount going forward and had a couple of nervy moments up against his compatriot Robben, but played well in tricky circumstances.
Michael Carrick 7 – Kept possession relatively well when United managed to wrestle the ball back from Bayern, and offered much needed protection to the United back line.
Ryan Giggs 6 – Barely touched the ball in the first half as Bayern had most of the ball, and was substituted at half time with a suspected groin injury.
Marouane Fellaini 5 – Too slow, too cumbersome and just not up to the speed of Bayern. Was guilty of giving possession away on a number of occasions before completely losing Bastian Schweinsteiger for the equaliser.
Antonio Valencia 7 – Got up and down the right flank admirably to track the overlapping David Alaba, but also posed a few problems for the Austrian in the final third.
Wayne Rooney 7 – Not his finest night but a solid display from Rooney, who was asked to play on his own as a central striker and worked tirelessly throughout.
Danny Welbeck 8 – Should’ve buried his one-on-one chance in the first half, but Welbeck was key to United’s counter-attacks, offering pace and athleticism that Bayern struggled to deal with at times.
Subs:
Shinji Kagawa 6 – was introduced at half time for Giggs, but failed to really threaten the Bayern defence.
Ashley Young 6 – put in a couple of half decent crosses but didn’t have enough of the ball to really hurt Pep Guardiola’s men.
Javier Hernandez – wasn’t on the field long enough to make an impact.
