Manchester United beat Hull City 1-0 in Saturday’s evening kick-off thanks to a last-gasp goal from Marcus Rashford to maintain their 100% record so far this season. Here’s a look at how the United players rated in the victory.
David De Gea – 6/10
One free-kick from Snodgrass had De Gea caught motionless but as it went wide we will give the Spaniard the benefit of the doubt. Otherwise, was rarely troubled with his side completely on top.
Antonio Valencia – 6.5/10
Looking more and more at home in his new position at right-back, but could do with getting forward more to give the side width and working on whipping in crosses for the tall options that United have in the middle of the park.
Eric Bailly – 7.5/10
An oasis of calm at the back. Shows who’s boss whenever the opposition begin to pose a threat, both in the air and along the ground. Will be annoyed he allowed David Meyler to get that shot away towards the end.
Daley Blind – 7/10
An equally impressive performance as his defensive colleague. Snuffed out the few attacks that came his way using his nous and positioning.
Luke Shaw – 7/10
It’s just good to see the young left-back on the field after last year’s horror injury. Didn’t combine as much with Martial down the left in the first half as he might have liked, but in the second-half he found himself in central midfield as United went gung-ho in search of a winning goal.
Marouane Fellaini – 7/10
Can still look like a red card waiting to happen at times, and under the new directives could have been the first to see red for arguing with Jon Moss’ yellow card. Otherwise he had a good game in the centre of the park, playing in behind Pogba and nullifying any opposition attacks.
Paul Pogba – 7/10
Not as good as his first outing against Southampton, but still came close to breaking the deadlock and was always in the game. Might be guilty of trying a bit too hard which is understandable on days like today when it seems like it is going against you, but he kept on offering himself and will come very good eventually.
Juan Mata – 5.5/10
Had one good moment when he stood up Andrew Robertson and fed Rooney who was unlucky not to score, but a lack of threat was exemplified by the performances of Rashford and Mkhitaryan when they came on. May find himself on the bench after the international break.
Wayne Rooney – 8/10
The captain’s place in the side is constantly under threat if you listen to social media, but when United needed someone to make it happen at the business end, Rooney was there. Found the speed and energy to go around Elmohamady and feed a pinpoint ball into the feet of Rashford for the goal, while he came closest to scoring in the first half as well.
Rooney and Ibrahimovic both came close to breaking the deadlock themselves
Anthony Martial – 5.5/10
Martial may be suffering from the dreaded second-season syndrome. Having been so effective last year with his goalscoring and speed, the Frenchman didn’t make any runs of note from out wide and a more natural goalscorer might have got on the end of Rooney’s chip inside in the first-half.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic – 7.5/10
Until Rashford came on, he looked like the best bet to break the deadlock. Put in a few marvellous touches, using his long legs and touch to bring down crosses when others wouldn’t get near. One header in the first half grazed the top of the bar, while his touch and back-heel from a free-kick could have been one for the highlights reel.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan (60′ for Martial) – 7/10
he new signing may find his name in the starting line-up after his performance off the bench today. Went on one notable dazzling run as he skipped through three Hull defenders, whilst earning two promising free-kicks for his side that couldn’t be converted.
Marcus Rashford (71′ for Mata) – 9/10
It’s not often the man of the match is only on the field for 23 minutes, but Rashford deserves the crown from the Manchester United side. Almost scored one curling individual effort, before whipping in a delightful cross from which Ibrahimovic will be annoyed not to have scored. Then, when his skipper put in a perfect ball, it was Rashford who made the run and tapped home from half a yard. Hard to believe this was his first appearance in the Premier League this year.
