Manchester United are still expected to offload Newcastle United targets Dean Henderson and Phil Jones in January despite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s exit.

Solskjaer was sacked on Sunday morning, just hours after a dismal 4-1 defeat at Watford.

United’s decision may lead some players to reconsidered their future.

Eurosport claim that Jesse Lingard could end up staying at the club. Out of contract next summer, Lingard could change his mind and sign a new deal.

However, that same report claims the situations of two players won’t change at all.

That’s goalkeeper Dean Henderson and defender Phil Jones, with United willing to let them go on loan and permanently respectively.

Newcastle interested in United duo Henderson and Jones

This could be music to the ears of decision makers at Newcastle United.

The Sun report that Newcastle want to sign Jones in January to bolster Eddie Howe’s back line.

The Daily Mail add that Newcastle fancy signing £120k-a-week goalkeeper Henderson in January.

Newcastle may have been fearing that Solskjaer’s exit would lead them to miss out on a couple of key January targets.

Instead, it sounds like both Henderson and Jones will still be available for Newcastle to sign.

Whether they actually should move for either player is another matter.

Newcastle already have a number of goalkeepers, so signing another one seems strange unless some are leaving.

As for Jones, he hasn’t even played for nearly two years. That’s not the kind of profile Newcastle need, and certainly not what you want in a relegation battle.

Newcastle may be wise to avoid Jones even if he remains available after Solskjaer’s exit – and there may be bigger priorities than Henderson too.
