Manchester United and Tottenham have avoided doing business recently.

Dimitar Berbatov #9 of Manchester United gets away from Andreas Hinkel #2 of Celtic F.C. during a friendly match at the Rogers Centre July 16, 2010 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United have not done business since Dimitar Berbatov’s 2008 transfer which left the North London side losing out.

It has not been for United’s lack of trying, with a huge bid for Gareth Bale turned down before he joined Real Madrid, while their overtures for Harry Kane have also been flatly dismissed.

Now they are hoping to finally get lucky, and strike a deal for wantaway Spurs defender Toby Alderweireld, The Mail report.

Spurs did sell to a rival English side when they let Kyle Walker join Manchester City last summer, so United may fancy their chances 10 years on from the Berbatov transfer.

So it probably is not a good idea for United to anger Tottenham over a separate deal of lesser importance.

Daniel Levy takes his seat in the stand for the game during the Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland at White Hart Lane on September 18, 2016 in London, England.

The Mail reported last week that United have made an offer to try and sign Tottenham teenager Nonso Madueke.

United are keen to poach the 16-year-old away before he turns professional.

But this is only likely to harm their chances of signing Alderweireld, with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy notoriously difficult to deal with.

The Times reported how Levy threatened to reported Chelsea to the FA over their attempts to sign Nya Kirby from Tottenham’s academy two years ago, with the youngster later ending up with Palace.

He would likely take a dim view of United’s interest in Madueke, and with Alderweireld’s future hanging precariously in the balance, it’s a move they currently should back off from making.
