Manchester United may now have to take loan offers for Newcastle United and West Ham United target Harry Maguire. The defender’s wage at Old Trafford could block his transfer.
That is according to Graeme Bailey, who claims that Manchester United have told Maguire that he can leave the club. Head coach Erik ten Hag has no issues with the 30-year-old on a professional or personal level. But he feels the centre-back earns too much to be a backup.
The Red Devils handed the 53-cap England international a £200k-a-week deal to June 2025 when he joined in August 2019. Manchester United also paid Leicester City a world-record fee for a defender of £80m. While Maguire also later became their captain in January 2020.

Harry Maguire has attracted transfer interest from Newcastle and West Ham
Now, Maguire’s wage is proving to be a problem as Ten Hag prefers Raphael Varane beside Lisandro Martinez in defence. It is also a problem for Manchester United as they try to sell Maguire even though Newcastle and West Ham are among those interested in his transfer.
So, Manchester United could have to accept loan offers to offload Maguire this summer. A permanent move away from Old Trafford in the future may also feature in discussions over his availability. But clubs are proving unwilling to buy a player Ten Hag called ‘magnificent’.

Manchester United know they will have to take a loss to sell Harry Maguire
Manchester United understand they would recoup far less than they paid Leicester to sell Maguire this summer, per 90min, which also cites Newcastle’s interest. Yet many Premier League teams are also monitoring his situation at Old Trafford given Maguire is up for sale.
Red Devils chiefs have also warned Maguire that he may fall even further down Ten Hag’s pecking order next season. Manchester United are keen to sign another centre-back in the summer and informed their club captain thusly. Yet any move away is not straightforward.
Ten Hag is also not against Maguire staying and fighting for a place against further centre-half competition. But Ben Jacobs reports the defender’s availability also interests Wolves. He could replace Max Kilman at Molineux with the Black Country side likely to face offers.
