Manchester United are closing in on Matheus Cunha just a year since Leeds United made a real push to secure his signature.

It’s probably easier to talk about the areas United don’t need to strengthen before the transfer deadline.

Their goalkeeper is error-prone and not good enough on the ball, their defence is all at sea, their midfield can’t control games and their attack looks weak.

If Erik ten Hag is to make any sort of progress at Old Trafford, he needs an influx of quality signings in the coming weeks and it looks like one addition is moving closer.

Manchester United are closing in on Matheus Cunha

TalkSPORT report that United are closing in on a deal to sign Atletico Madrid attacker Matheus Cunha.

It’s stated that a deal worth around €50million (£42million) for Cunha is now in the works with negotiations now advanced.

Cunha joins Atletico from Hertha Berlin for around £22million last summer so the Spanish side will almost double their money before any sell-on clauses.

The Brazilian only managed six goals and even assists in La Liga last season but that came in just over 1000 minutes of action, which isn’t a bad record at all.

Cunha is a technically-gifted attacker who can play as a striker or number 10, with his powerful shooting ability one of his most recognisable traits.

Cunha’s name may ring a bell to some Leeds United fans given that the Whites pursued him for much of last summer.

Reports in Brazil suggested that Leeds were really pushing to sign Cunha and that Marcelo Bielsa personally asked Leeds to sign him.

No deal was done though as Atletico swooped in and beat Leeds to his signing, robbing Whites fans of the chance to see Raphinha and Cunha in action together.

Fast forward a year or so and it now looks like Cunha will be donning the famous red shirt of Leeds’ bitter rivals United very soon.

Manchester United host Leeds at Old Trafford in September and Cunha may well have the chance to score against the Whites in a turn of events that few could have seen coming.
