Manchester United could end up bringing in a former Liverpool man with Andy O’Boyle being lined up for a shock recruitment role at Old Trafford.
That’s according to the Daily Mail, who claim that O’Boyle is in contention to become ‘deputy director of football’ at United.
United are seeking somebody to work alongside John Murtough as the Red Devils look to completely re-tool on and off the pitch.
United looking to bolster their recruitment department isn’t a huge surprise and is actually much-needed; they have fallen behind Liverpool and Manchester City in that regard.
Going for O’Boyle seems strange though given that his background isn’t really towards the directorship side of the game.
O’Boyle was actually an academy coach at United in 2006 but has mostly worked around sports science and fitness coaching.
O’Boyle worked with Wrexham as a fitness coach and Coventry City as head of sports science before a huge move to Liverpool.
At Anfield, O’Boyle was head of fitness elite development and then first-team fitness coach all whilst working for The FA too.
O’Boyle left Liverpool in 2017 and now serves as the head of elite performance at the Premier League.
The Northern Irishman may specialise in sports science, but it’s claimed that his general football experience has him in United’s good books.

United are using a recruitment agency to find help for Murtough and they’re seemingly pushing O’Boyle’s case.
Going from Liverpool’s first-team fitness coach to United’s deputy director of football is quite the progression for O’Boyle.
His job would ultimately be to try and help United catch up to Liverpool and eventually overtake them and will have some knowledge of how the Reds operate.
That may be appealing to United, who face a huge summer as they chase a new manager and no doubt a raft of new signings.
