Former Manchester United defender Paul McGrath has been speaking about what he believes is the key transfer for Louis van Gaal’s side.

In an exclusive interview with Talk Sport, the former Republic of Ireland international said, “Van Gaal will want money to spend (in January). They badly need an older, more experienced defender.

“It’s all about what you’re allowed to spend and what players will come to the club.”

Mats Hummels continues to be linked with a big-money move while the latest claim was that United were interested in an unlikely loan deal to bring Thomas Vermaelen to Old Trafford.

However the Daily Mail is now reporting that United are not interested in the Belgian international and are looking elsewhere in their attempts to strengthen their back-line.

The report claims United were interested in the player during his time at Arsenal but not now, which is no surprise given that he is yet to make his competitive debut for Barcelona and may require surgery following his latest setback.
