Sir Alex Ferguson says he is hoping to match Liverpool’s record of five European Cups. Ferguson has been in charge of two European Cup wins during his time at the club and United need another two to make a total of five. Ferguson has said it’s what keeps him going after 26 years at the club.

Manchester United have been given further injury problems after Nani and Jonny Evans both suffered knocks in the win against Braga. United have been suffering with injury problems since the start of the season with Evans becoming the latest defensive casualty despite the return of Chris Smalling.

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has revealed his frustration at being injured over the start of the season. Smalling returned to first team action for United in the 3-1 win away at Braga in the Champions League. Smalling says he feels ready to compete for a regular place for the rest of the season.

Stoke City manager Tony Pulis has said he is hoping and praying that the club can keep defender Ryan Shawcross. Shawcross has been linked with a big money move to Manchester United which would mean a return to the club where his career began. Stoke are trying to commit Shawcross to a long term contract, however Pulis added if a big money bid from a top three or four club came then Stoke would likely have no option but to sell.

Manchester United winger Ashley Young has returned to the England international squad. Young missed the first part of the season with injury but has been playing well for United and has done enough to earn himself a recall to the full England squad for the friendly with Sweden next week.

Manchester United forward Nick Powell is set to make his international debut for the England Under-21 side against Northern Ireland. Powell signed for the club from Crewe in the summer and has had a big impact in the first team chances he has been given by Sir Alex Ferguson.

Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan says the club is relieved to have qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League. The United deputy says it was the main aim of the side to qualify as quickly as possible which would allow key players to be rested ahead of important games.

Manchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs has become the latest United star to compare Robin Van Persie to former United striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy. Giggs says Van Persie is, and will continue, having a similar effect in terms of scoring goals that Van Nistelrooy had when he was the main striker at the club.
