United went into the game under something of a cloud following Saturday’s 4-1 drubbing at the hands of Watford.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer paid the price with his job, meaning United headed to Spain without a permanent manager.
Former United ace Michael Carrick took charge as a caretaker, though a another interim could yet come in.
Carrick is well-respected coach but had to try and work quickly to get his players ready for Villarreal.
In the end, United won 2-0 as Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho both struck for the Red Devils.

There may now be shouts for Carrick to stay in charge after this win – and Carragher took the opportunity to mock Ferdinand about it.
We all remember Ferdinand jubilantly calling for Solskjaer to get the job permanently back in the 2018-19 season.
Solskjaer has only been gone a couple of days, but that moment is being brought back up.
Carragher copied that message word for word except for replacing Solskjaer with Carrick, poking fun at his former England teammate.
Carrick is unlikely to get the Manchester United job, but just like with Solskjaer, you never know…
