Manchester United are interested in signing Alex McCarthy from Southampton in the summer transfer window, according to 90min.

The report has claimed that Manchester United are looking for a back-up goalkeeper to David de Gea, and one of the players they are looking at is McCarthy of Southampton.

De Gea is the number one goalkeeper at the Red Devils at the moment, while Tom Heaton is his back-up.

Should Alex McCarthy leave Southampton for Manchester United?

In our opinion, if Alex McCarthy has the chance to leave Southampton for Manchester United, then he should take it.

Yes, United have had a few tough years recently, but the Red Devils are arguably the biggest club in England and are still hugely appealing for players.

McCarthy is 32 now, and he is unlikely to become a first-choice goalkeeper at any top club in the Premier League.

Even at Southampton, the £50,000-a-week (Spotrac) English goalkeeper is not guaranteed a place in the starting lineup.

So, leaving the Saints for the Red Devils would make sense for the goalkeeper, especially as it would be a step-up for him in his career.

McCarthy has made 141 appearances in the Premier League so far in his career, keeping 29 clean sheets in the process.
