Former Manchester United midfielder Eric Djemba-Djemba conceded the winning penalty late on for his new club St Mirren yesterday.
The Cameroonian, branded by Sir Alex Ferguson as his worst signing ever, had already suffered a debut to forget when he was almost sent off after signing for the SPL side in January.
But Djemba-Djemba went one worse this weekend, capping off his home debut by conceding a spot-kick late on – one that eventually settled the match as visitors Aberdeen won 1-0.
The 32-year-old, though, insisted the tackle was outside the box yet did admit to reporters that he should not have made the challenge in the first place:
“The beginning of the tackle was outside [the box].
“I’m a little bit disappointed because I’m experienced and shouldn’t have tackled there.
“I said to the referee it was outside and if it is a penalty then he should also have red-carded me because I was already on a booking.
“I apologised to my team-mates but they said to me, ‘That’s football’ and that we are all in this together.”
Indeed, Adam Rooney converted the penalty, cementing Aberdeen’s place in second, while St Mirren remain in ninth.
The club are far from in danger of relegation, however, with Hearts bottom of the SPL on just six points – 16 behind their nearest rivals.
But former Man United man Djemba-Djemba will no doubt be hoping for better. Let’s hope he can finally get some luck.
