Manchester United genuinely believed that Tottenham Hotspur were a serious contender to sign Rasmus Hojlund this summer.
Tottenham Hotspur were seen as a major threat to Manchester United’s hopes of signing Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta.
That is according to The Athletic, who have been discussing the competition United faced for Hojlund over the summer.
United were desperate to sign a strike over the summer and there were strong links surrounding a deal for Harry Kane.
United went down a different path in the end, preferring to sign a young up-and-comer in Hojlund over a proven striker like Kane.
Manchester United feared Tottenham Hotspur battle over Rasmus Hojlund
Kane leaving Tottenham for Bayern Munich meant that Spurs were in the market for another attacking option.
It’s now suggested that United feared Tottenham would look to replace Kane with Hojlund.
United genuinely believed that Tottenham were a real contender for Hojlund at a price tag of £70million.
The Red Devils knew that Paris Saint-Germain wanted Hojlund but then seemingly believed that Tottenham were joining the race too.
United ended up paying £64million rising to £72million for Hojlund, eventually tempting Atalanta into selling in a big-money move.
Tottenham went for a completely different option to Hojlund
If Spurs did make a huge move for Hojlund then they have kept it a secret.
Tottenham maybe did like Hojlund and his potential, but they went down a completely different route with their attacking signing.
Spurs landed Brennan Johnson to boost Ange Postecoglou’s side, going for a versatile forward with serious pace rather than an out-and-out striker like Hojlund.
Postecoglou did like playing with a physical forward at Celtic with Giorgos Giakoumakis and Oh Hyeon-gyu springing to mind.
Hojlund would have fit a similar bill but Tottenham were never likely to splash more than £60million on him, instead going for Johnson.
