Manchester United overcame their Norwegian opponents with ease on Sunday.

Manchester United overcame Valerenga 3-0 on Sunday courtesy of goals from Marouane Fellaini, Romelu Lukaku and Scott McTominay.

The Belgian midfielder’s opener was an emphatic response to rumours earlier in the day that he could be on his way, while his countryman continued his fine start to life at Old Trafford.

As for McTominay, he is just one of the promising youngsters that has stepped up to the challenge this summer, impressing to such an extent that it is hard to imagine him not ultimately making the breakthrough at United.

Another such player is Timothy Fosu-Mensah, who thought he had forced his way in under former manager Louis van Gaal only to struggle for game time once Jose Mourinho took charge.

While a late change to the team sheet saw Fosu-Mensah replaced in United’s starting XI by Matteo Darmian on Sunday, the teenager did get a chance in the second half and – as always – he performed admirably.

Still only 19, the defender-cum-midfielder is proving his worth as a right-back, and on recent evidence he is the ideal deputy to Antonio Valencia.

While many see his future as a holding midfielder, for now Fosu-Mensah has the drive and the determination to excel out wide.
