United are through to the fourth round of the EFL Cup after beating Northampton Town 3-1.

Manchester United ended their run of three successive defeats under Jose Mourinho with a comfortable win against League One side Northampton Town.
A blocked Wayne Rooney free-kick ended with Michael Carrick firing the ball in the back of the net to open the scoring. Despite the comfortable win for the Red Devils, Town did test United by levelling shortly after with a penalty from Alex Revell.
United, whose Xl cost £183 million, was up against a £100,000 Northampton side, who put up a great fight. In the end, it was Mourinho’s team who secured the victory as further goals came from Ander Herrera and substitute Marcus Rashford.

The win for United follows defeats to Manchester City, Watford and Feyenoord in the Europa League, and United will face rivals City again in the fourth round.
A player who has not had a great start to United’s season is captain Wayne Rooney. In a game where Rooney should have performed, the striker failed to make an impact, with Rashford instead making a statement to Mourinho by coming off the bench and scoring again. Rooney’s passes and finishing touch could have been a lot better.
Questions have been raised as to whether or not Mourinho should drop the 30-year-old in United’s game against champions Leicester at Old Trafford on Saturday.
United fans reacted on Twitter to Rooney’s performance last night and they were not happy.
