Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has announced the 20-man squad that will head to their Europa League clash on Thursday but is leaving a number of first-team stars at home.

Among those players is 30-year-old captain Wayne Rooney who will not fly out ahead of the game but instead will be “rested” at home.

It may not come as a huge surprise that twitter has erupted with fans’ reactions and the majority of them are celebrating the exclusion of Rooney from the team, after what critics have deemed a slow start to the season.

Speaking with the media at a press conference, Mourinho said, as quoted by BBC Sport: “He has played every game since the start of the season and he played 90 minutes with England.

“I want thim to be fresh for the next games. He plays in an attacking position, where I have lots of options.”

Other exclusions include Antonio Valencia, Luke Shaw and Jesse Lingard.

Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford is set to make his first start for the club this season, fresh from scoring a hat-trick for England’s U21 and a positive performance from United’s derby loss on Saturday.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Marcos Rojo and Memphis Depay are all also included in the squad heading to Rotterdam for tomorrow’s match.
