Manchester United have plenty of left-backs in their squad but on Sunday their manager Jose Mourinho opted to start Ashley Young ahead of the likes of Matteo Darmian, Luke Shaw and Daley Blind and the 32-year-old did not disappoint.

Young was expected to leave Old Trafford in the summer but despite having less than a year remaining on his current contract, he looks set to see it out before possibly leaving as a free agent in 2018. That said, if he keeps delivering as he did against Everton he may yet earn a new deal.

United defeated the Toffees 4-0 courtesy of a wonder-strike from fellow full-back Antonio Valencia and late goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial, and Mourinho’s men joined Manchester City at the top of the table as a consequence.

Young missed the start of the season due to injury. However he started the Champions League clash with Swiss side Basel and kicked off against Everton just a few days later.

It will be interesting to see just how much the United veteran plays in the months ahead, with Shaw now back to full fitness and gunning for chances, while Blind and Darmian will also feature regularly as the matches come thick and fast.

After the game against Everton we took to Twitter to see what United fans thought of Young’s performance and you can read a selection of what we found below:
