Tottenham Hotspur stunned Old Trafford on Monday night as they thrashed Manchester United 3-0 in a superb performance from Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Spurs headed to Old Trafford looking to continue their fine start to the season, and after a tight first half, Tottenham took complete control in a virtually flawless second half display.

Harry Kane scored an inch-perfect header from Kieran Trippier’s corner to put Spurs in front, and Christian Eriksen’s impressive movement allowed him to tee up Lucas Moura for the second just moments later.

Spurs weathered the United storm after their second, and were then able to hit Jose Mourinho’s side on the break, with Moura dancing past Chris Smalling before whipping an outstanding finish beyond David De Gea for 3-0.

The result kept up Tottenham’s 100% start to the season, and there was an air of familiarity about the performance given that Pochettino started with Toby Alderweireld, Mousa Dembele and Danny Rose in his line-up for the first time in over 18 months.

Alderweireld’s revival is particularly impressive, as he starred against Fulham before being a key part of the Spurs back four against Manchester United, turning in an outstanding performance as he impressed with his timing in every aspect of defending.

It’s somewhat ironic that the Belgian international turned in such a perfect performance against United, the team who wanted to sign him over the summer, and Red Devils fans were quick to note that irony.

United fans suggested that Alderweireld was ‘terrific’ and ‘an absolute colossus’ in the Spurs defence, whilst slamming Ed Woodward for not signing the Tottenham star, believing that the result would have been different if Alderweireld was playing for Mourinho and not Pochettino.
