Jose Mourinho handed Manchester United youngster Scott McTominay his first Champions League start last night in a 2-0 win over Benfica.

McTominay made his first team debut at the end of last season and has been on the fringes of the first team this campaign.

With £89 million star Paul Pogba still out injured along with Marouane Fellaini, McTominay was selected to start at Old Trafford against the Portuguese champions.

McTominay, 20, was not flashy, but he was effective in the middle of the pitch as the Red Devils cruised to their fourth successive Champions League win to qualify for the knockout stages.

The youngster had one shot on target, completed 83 per cent of his passes, and won three aerial duels.

He also made three tackles and won three interceptions, featuring for all 90 minutes alongside impressive Serbian international Nemanja Matic, whose shot led to United’s first goal.

The Red Devils scored through an own goal from Benfica goalkeeper Mile Svilar, and a penalty from Daley Blind, but this was McTominay’s night, and one he will cherish.
