Darmian was filling in for United at left-back, with Jose Mourinho continuing to rotate his options in the position.
The Italian played the same role away to Anderlecht in the last round, a game which ended a 1-1 draw.
Darmian was a Louis van Gaal signing from Torino in 2014, and had an excellent start before coming up against Alexis Sanchez in a defeat to Arsenal at The Emirates.
