Manchester United defender Chris Smalling signed a new deal to stay at Old Trafford today.

Manchester United today confirmed that centre back Chris Smalling has signed a new contract to stay at Old Trafford until 2019.

Smalling, 25, joined United from Fulham in 2010, despite playing just 19 times for Fulham after a move from non-league outfit Maidstone United.

The England international has largely been inconsistent at United, though he has often been used at right back – which certainly isn’t his best position.

This season though, Smalling has enjoyed a period of great development under Louis van Gaal, and his recent displays have been outstanding.

Smalling has become a key player in United’s defence, and he underlined his importance with the fourth goal in United’s 4-2 win over rivals Manchester City earlier this month.

With his contract set to expire in just over a year’s time, Smalling has now penned an extension to keep him at Old Trafford until 2019.

That news has largely been met well by United fans on Twitter, with many noting his improvement and development under the stewardship of van Gaal.

However, other fans were concerned that United tied up a deal to keep Smalling before they secured David de Gea’s future at Old Trafford, with the Spaniard’s contract also set to expire in 2016.

Here are some of the reactions from United fans after Smalling’s contract extension was confirmed this afternoon…
