The Spanish midfielder played for an hour of Manchester United’s FA Cup third round tie.
Manchester United had to fight extremely hard for their 1-0 victory against League One side Sheffield United on Saturday.
While Louis van Gaal’s side had looked far better in recent matches against Chelsea and Swansea City, it was back to the drab football that has been the norm at Old Trafford under the Dutchman.
Despite the presence of Juan Mata, Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney, it was not until Memphis Depay was brought off the bench with 30 minutes of normal-time remaining that United injected some much needed urgency into their play.
The Dutch international replaced Mata at the same time as Ander Herrera came off the field, and while the Spaniard impressed with his passing ability too often he played the ball backwards or sideways rather than forwards – as he is more than capable of doing with devastating effect.
