Everton are reportedly keen on Manchester United’s Chris Smalling.
Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has just 15 months left on his contract – and he is now being linked with a summer move away from Old Trafford.
Smalling, 28, joined United from Fulham way back in January 2010, despite the fact that he had only played 19 first-team games for the Cottagers following a move from non-league side Maidstone United.
Earmarked as the heir to Rio Ferdinand, Smalling hasn’t quite lived up to expectations at Old Trafford, but he has made nearly 300 appearances for the Red Devils whilst also becoming an England regular.
However, Smalling has been in and out of the side under Jose Mourinho after impressing under Louis van Gaal, and a summer exit could be on the cards given his contract situation.
The Mirror now report that Premier League rivals Everton are interested in signing Smalling this summer, and could launch a move if given encouragement that the centre back would be available.
Smalling may be viewed as a replacement for Ashley Williams in the Everton defence, partnering another former United centre back in Michael Keane.
Since the rumours emerged, United fans have been taking to Twitter to offer their views on Smalling, with one fan feeling that he is a great squad player to have and gets far too much criticism for his displays.
However, the majority of fans want to see Smalling go this summer, begging Everton to take him whilst even offering to take him to Goodison Park themselves in order to get him away from United, touting Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld as a replacement.
