Manchester United want Everton’s Asmir Begovic as they target the veteran goalkeeper to serve as competition for David De Gea.
This promises to be a frantic end to the window for United, who haven’t got nearly enough business done this summer.
The terrible start to the new seasons just goes to show how much support Erik ten Hag needs and new signings are imperative.
Every day, it feels like more and more potential signings are being linked with United but few could have predicted Begovic.
Manchester United want Everton’s Asmir Begovic
The Telegraph report that United are targeting a deal to bring Begovic from Everton to Old Trafford before the transfer deadline.
It’s stated that United see Begovic as the perfect cover and competition for David De Gea.
United have loaned Dean Henderson to Nottingham Forest and they would ideally want Tom Heaton to be third-choice this season.
Begovic would be viewed as second-choice to De Gea and his status as a homegrown player is very appealing to the Red Devils.
However, Frank Lampard is ‘determined’ to keep hold of Begovic and doesn’t want him to leave Goodison Park.
Begovic, 35, served as Jordan Pickford’s backup last season and featured just three times in the Premier League.
The Bosnian international has previously served as a backup at Chelsea and AC Milan, so he would be no stranger to his kind of role at a huge club like United.
Begovic has just one year left on his Everton deal and United will now hope that the lure of playing at Old Trafford can tempt him away from Merseyside.
This isn’t anywhere near as exciting as yesterday’s rumour of a deal for Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer, a quality ball-playing stopper who could seriously challenge De Gea.
Instead, signing Begovic would pretty much confirm that De Gea – who looks unconvincing on the ball and shaky between the sticks right now – would remain as first-choice.
Everton will look to stand firm but United appear to be making their big push for the experienced Begovic.
