Manchester United continue to dominate transfer headlines this January, with several players facing uncertain futures and new targets emerging as Michael Carrick looks to reshape his squad.

From Bruno Fernandes’ long-term outlook to growing interest in Hayden Hackney, here is the latest from Old Trafford.

Bruno Fernandes is not expected to leave Manchester United in the January transfer window, but his future beyond this season remains unclear.

The 31-year-old captain has been the subject of increased speculation in recent weeks following continued instability at the club and his reported meeting with a member of Ruben Amorim’s former coaching staff.

Fernandes is said to be waiting until the end of the campaign to decide whether he remains part of United’s long-term project, depending on how the team evolves under Carrick’s interim management.

Harry Maguire attracts Serie A interest

Harry Maguire could be the next major departure from Manchester United as interest builds from Italy. Inter Milan, Napoli, and Fiorentina have all reportedly expressed interest in signing the experienced defender before the window closes.

With Carrick expected to move away from Amorim’s back-three system, United may be open to parting ways with Maguire if the right offer arrives. His leadership and experience remain valued, but the club’s desire to refresh its defensive line could lead to a move abroad for the England international.

Hayden Hackney on Man United’s radar

Manchester United and Tottenham are among the Premier League clubs monitoring Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney.

The 23-year-old has been one of the standout players in the Championship this season, recording three goals and six assists in 26 games.

Middlesbrough value him at £30 million but are reluctant to sell during their promotion push. United view Hackney as a potential long-term midfield option, particularly if they offload fringe players later in the year. A summer move is more likely, though talks may continue quietly this month.

Kobbie Mainoo set to stay under Michael Carrick

Kobbie Mainoo’s situation at Manchester United appears more settled following Michael Carrick’s arrival. The 20-year-old midfielder struggled for minutes under Ruben Amorim, often forced to compete with Bruno Fernandes for playing time.

There had been discussions about a potential loan to Napoli, but those plans are now off the table. Carrick’s appointment is seen as a positive development for Mainoo, with the young midfielder expected to be reintegrated into the first-team setup and given opportunities to prove himself in the second half of the campaign.

Man United monitoring Bournemouth’s Alex Scott

Alex Scott’s rise at Bournemouth has not gone unnoticed by Manchester United, who are keeping tabs on the 22-year-old England international.

Scott earned his first senior call-up in November and has continued to impress with his composure and creativity in midfield.

United is one of several Premier League clubs, alongside Manchester City, Aston Villa, and Newcastle United, keeping a close watch on his progress. Bournemouth remain determined to keep hold of him until at least the summer, though interest from multiple top-six clubs could test their resolve.

Gareth Southgate is not in Manchester United’s managerial plans

Despite speculation, Manchester United are not considering Gareth Southgate as a candidate for their long-term head coach role.

While his former assistant Steve Holland recently joined Michael Carrick’s backroom staff, sources close to the club insist Southgate is not being targeted.

Instead, the hierarchy is said to favour a proven winner for their next permanent appointment. Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique is reportedly under serious consideration, with his contract entering its final year and no extension yet agreed in France.

As Carrick oversees a period of transition, United’s focus remains on stability and preparation for the summer window, when key transfer and managerial decisions are expected to shape the next chapter at Old Trafford.
