The Manchester United defender would be a superb addition to the West Bromwich Albion squad this summer.

Reports surfaced yesterday suggesting that Baggies boss Tony Pulis is keen on strengthening his defensive ranks this summer, with the Mirror claiming that he is lining up an ambitious double swoop for Manchester United pair Phil Jones and Chris Smalling.

Whilst both players are obviously very much top level performers, Jones would be a particularly impressive signing for West Brom, what with his ability to play in a variety of different positions – something that could prove to be crucial during what is a long and physically punishing campaign.

The 25-year-old moved to Old Trafford from Blackburn Rovers in the summer of 2011, for a fee believed to be in the region of £16.5 million, and has gone on to make 167 appearances for the Red Devils.

He can operate at centre-back, right-back and even in the holding midfield role – something that would surely have been a major attraction for Pulis.

Jones’ winning mentality and experience of playing at the very highest level for such a sustained period of time would be a huge asset to the Baggies squad, who are currently bereft of that particular quality.

The former Blackburn man is renowned for his 100 per cent commitment to the game, along with his tenacious and aggressive playing style.

The 21-capped England international has just two years remaining on his current deal with United, and Jose Mourinho would surely prefer to sanction his exit this summer, rather than allow his contract to enter the final 12 months next year.

Quite how much Pulis would have to pay to secure Jones’ services remains to be seen, but he would undoubtedly prove to be a magnificent signing for West Brom, irrelevant of price.
