Luke Shaw’s difficult season has ended on a bitter note after he picked a serious foot injury.

The Guardian report Shaw faces months on the sidelines and could even miss the start of the 2017/18 season.

Shaw’s future at United was unclear before the injury, but his spell on the treatment table should ensure he stays at Old Trafford for the time being.

Tottenham Hotspur were listed as 5/1 favourites to sign the left-back, according to bookies SkyBet, with the defender previously working with head coach Mauricio Pochettino at Southampton.

Rumours have been swirling over the future of Spurs first choice left-back Danny Rose, with The Mirror reporting he is a £50 million target for Manchester City.

The Mirror‘s report claimed Spurs could seek to replace Rose with Luke Shaw if a mega money offer arrived.

Letting Rose go would be an unpopular decision for supporters to try and deal with, but it would be tempered by Spurs recruiting one of England’s most highly rated young players in his place.

Fans would have had to trust in Pochettino’s previous work with the player and hope he could get him back to his best.

Given the history between the pair, Shaw would be surely the only acceptable replacement should Tottenham elect to take the money and run regarding Rose.

Shaw’s injury should then make Tottenham fans rest a little easier that there is less chance of them taking the crazy option to cash in on Rose.

The defender has developed into a real terrace hero and usurped Shaw in the England team in the process. Letting him leave would be a bad move, especially with the ideal replacement now unavailable to start next season.

With Shaw’s fitness called into question in recent seasons, a pre-season under Pochettino would be the only way for Spurs to get him up to speed. His injury prognosis puts this off the table entirely.
