Can Manchester City land a player during this window capable of making the top five in the future?

As the January transfer window begins to kick into top gear, here is HITC Sport’s look at Manchester City’s five best signings since the start of the Premier League era in 1992:

5. Shaun Goater

Shaun Goater

Shaun Goater is perhaps the greatest signing that Manchester City made between 1992 and their progression into Premier League title contenders. The Bermuda international scored 84 times in 184 league games following his arrival in 1998, and bagged some of those goals in the top flight. Opposition teams would always be reminded when they visited Maine Road, feed the Goat and he will score.

4. David Silva

The Spaniard is arguably one of the Premier League’s most gifted players ever. His ability on the ball and incredible vision has meant that he has been a key man for the Citizens for almost seven years having joined in July 2010. He has managed a staggering 61 assists in the top flight alone since moving to the Etihad Stadium.

3. Yaya Toure

Though Yaya Toure is beginning to reach the twilight of his career, his influence on the team has certainly not diminished that much over the years. Since his move to England – also in July 2010 – he has inspired City to two league titles and an FA Cup win. It was his goal that decided the 2011 cup final, and during the 2013-14 title win, he bagged a staggering 20 goals in the league.

2. Vincent Kompany

If it was not for injury, Vincent Kompany would surely top the list and be considered Manchester City’s greatest signing since 1992, if not ever. However, the inspirational Belgian’s legacy has been somewhat tainted by his inability to keep fit in recent years. Nevertheless, nothing will taint the memory of seeing Kompany lift the Premier League title in 2012 after the most dramatic of final days.

The reason that Kompany was able to get his hands on the trophy five years ago was because of Sergio Aguero’s incredible winner in stoppage-time against Queens Park Rangers that denied Manchester United the league crown. His current tally of 113 goals in 164 league games would be enough to ensure his place in City folklore before you even consider that he scored arguably the most iconic goal in Premier League history.
