Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero has netted 12 Premier League goals this season, but only provided his first assists in Sunday’s victory over Southampton.
Sergio Aguero justifies his lavish salary at Manchester City by providing a regular source of goals – a rather impressive 92 in 140 appearances, to be precise.
He is not paid to do the donkey work for others.
If the Argentine gets the merest sniff of the target when the ball is at his feet, it is safe to assume that he will be going it alone.
He is not selfish, a man disconnected from the collective cause.
Aguero is a goalscorer. That is what he does best and better than the vast majority of those earning a living as professional sportsmen and women.
It is, however, worth nothing that it has taken him until his 13th Premier League outing of the season to register an assist.
As it happens, with the South American in a giving mood on Sunday, he actually laid on two in a 3-0 victory over Southampton.
Given that he continues to do the business when it comes to finding the target himself, he can be let off for taking so long to provide for others.
It will be interesting to see, though, whether his impact on those around him increases if his individual numbers start to drop off – with the games about to come think and fast through to the end of the calendar year.

It is important to point out when looking at the Opta statistics above that Aguero has been looking for teammates, with 10 attempts at an assist made before getting one right.
It could be that the floodgates are now opened, with City starting to move through the gears as a star-studded unit in their pursuit of table-topping Chelsea.
Aguero will always be Manuel Pellegrini’s go-to man for goals, though, and it is unlikely that he will be calling on the stocky striker to change his ways after seeing him provide almost half of City’s top-flight return this term.
