Mohamed Salah scored another goal at the weekend as his incredible 2017/18 continues.

His unstoppable form has made him peerless in the quest for individual awards this season, apart from possibly, Manchester City’s Kevin de Bruyne.

De Bruyne has been at the heart of City’s surge to the Premier League title, which they are just one win away from clinching.

It is voting season for player of the year awards, and the two players are the clear favourites.

De Bruyne concedes Salah has a very strong case, but believes he has merit too, and set out his argument why he should be considered better, arguing there is more beyond simply goals.

The Belgian told The Mail: “In one way I believe I deserve it, because I have been very consistent in my form. I am very happy with myself.

“There is almost no game where my standard has dropped, so I have been very constant. To maintain the level in the amount of games I have played, the amount of minutes, I am very pleased with that.

“Salah has been on a remarkable goalscoring run and he plays very well in an inside forward type of role. This season he has been incredible, so to compare us, I don’t know.

“With the statistics, how are we going to compare ourselves? It’s totally different. I played at the weekend like a defensive midfielder, so how you can compare me to an inside forward? I have no idea.”

In terms of figures, Salah has added to his 29 league goals with nine assists.

De Bruyne is not as prolific in terms of goals, scoring seven, but his 15 assists are higher than Salah.

What could clinch it for Salah is that this is his first season in the Premier League with Liverpool, making his achievements all the more remarkable, while De Bruyne has been at City since 2015.
