Leeds United signed 17-year-old Mateusz Bogusz during the January transfer window.
Manchester City academy scout Jakub Bokiej has told Przeglad Sportowy that Leeds is the perfect place for Mateusz Bogusz to realise his full potential, but admitted that he is slightly disappointed that the Premier League champions did not try and land the 17-year-old.
Bogusz was one of two signings that Leeds made during the most recent January transfer window. He may still be awaiting his first-team debut for Marcelo Bielsa’s side, but there is plenty of excitement about the attacking midfielder’s potential.
He has caught the eye on several occasions for Carlos Corberan’s under-23s and Bielsa acknowledged his development by including him in the matchday squad a number of times before the season ended.
And following his first call-up to Poland’s under-20 squad ahead of this summer’s World Cup, Bokiej explained how excited he is about Bogusz’s potential following his switch to Leeds, while he also conceded that he wishes he was signed by another English club.
“Mateusz, despite his young age, is so intelligent and technically developed that he often avoids contact with his opponent without losing the ball thanks to good ball control or directional admission. You can also see that he has made enormous physical progress in the last 3-4 months,” he told Przeglad Sportowy.
“Leeds United is currently the perfect place to grow. A great training centre, a coach with whom many players from the world leaders and two Poles would like to work – Mateusz Klich and Kamil Miazek, thanks to whom Bogusz’ acclimatisation has been optimal. I can only regret that he did not go to Manchester City,” he went on to add.
As Bokiej suggests, Leeds appears to be the perfect place for Bogusz to take his game to another level. Bielsa has had to use a number of the under-23s due to the remarkable number of injuries there have been this past season, but you do not get the sense that he has any less faith in the youngsters than the first-team stars at Elland Road.
Bogusz is one player that most Leeds fans will probably back for a debut at some stage next season. And given what he has shown in the under-23s, and what people like Bokiej are saying about him, it would not be a surprise if he quickly proved to be as much of a revelation in the first-team as Jack Clarke and Jamie Shackleton have been this past year.
