The former Manchester United striker has reportedly called a truce with Roberto Mancini and is ready to aid City’s title charge, but could it backfire?
Manchester City are pretty desperate to retain Carlos Tevez.
That much was clear when they inserted a £6 million loyalty bonus into his contract, just to convince him to stay 12 months ago.
But not even those sort of untold riches for you or me could truly please the Argentine, what does that tell you about his liking for the club?
Don’t get me wrong, City bringing Tevez back could be inspired, and it could tip the club towards their first Premier League title.
But lets remember why Tevez was made an outcast in the first place.
Why risk upsetting the applecart?
It was September that Tevez had his bust-up with manager Roberto Mancini, over being told to warm-up against Bayern Munich, and Tevez decided not to bother.
There was discontent that night from other players.
Edin Dzeko and Pablo Zabaleta also appeared to be frustrated with their manager’s methods, yet Mancini’s tough approach to Tevez saw their voices of discontent slide into the background.
Pundit Graeme Souness described Tevez as a ‘bad apple’, and he was not wrong.
Bringing Tevez back risks re-opening divisions in the squad, and the Argentine is only happy when he is on the pitch.
At present he would be fourth choice striker, behind Dzeko, Balotelli and Aguero, just like he was at the start of the season after returning unfit. Yes they need a fourth striker, but do they really need Tevez?
It really did not work out well last time having a frustrated Tevez kicking his heels hanging around the place, why would they risk bringing him back.
There may be a sweet moment where he scores on his return- but what happens when a result doesn’t go City’s way, what will his effect be on the squad then?
City are going along nicely, top of the Premier League, and are grinding out results like Champions would; see yesterday’s 1-0 victory at Aston Villa.
They will likely be in the mix until the season’s final day. Why do anything that risks screwing that up?
