Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero has signed a one-year contract extension through to 2020 – quelling previous reports of a return to Argentina after the 2018 World Cup.

Sergio Aguero, the man who since signing in 2011 has scored 145 goals in 213 games for the blue side of Manchester, has signalled his commitment to the Manchester City cause by agreeing to a one-year contract extension – a move that could now see him spearhead Pep Guardiola’s quest for Champions League glory through to 2020.

Aguero’s current deal, signed back in 2014, was due to keep the former Atletico Madrid striker at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of his 30th birthday and it appears that new manager Pep Guardiola may have proven to be a significant factor in the new contract. Quoted in the Telegraph, Aguero revealed his admiration for Guardiola,

“I’m really happy with the new manager,” said Aguero.

“According to my style of playing, he is one of the managers that have helped me most in my career. Despite (my form) in the Premier League, and my last season at Atletico, I’ve improved in my game near the box and scoring goals. With Pep I will get even more chances.

Previous reports had surfaced suggesting that Aguero could be interested in returning to his native Argentina after the 2018 World Cup, with first club Independiente. However, in what will surely be great news for all Citizens, the man also known as ‘Kun’ seems settled and determined to remain in the Premier League.

Aguero, currently in the midst of a two-game domestic suspension, has experienced a typically prolific start to the season and will be hoping to build upon last year’s tally of 29 strikes (notably not worthy of selection in the PFA team of the year). The signs are positive, as Manchester City’s number 10 has scored nine goals in just five games so far this campaign and is in line to return to action in the Premier League fixture against Swansea City next weekend.
