Some Manchester City supporters have taken to Twitter to poke fun at Manchester United signing Fred’s latest Premier League performance as his side crashed to a 3-2 defeat at Brighton and Hove Albion.

City reportedly wanted to sign Fred in the summer as cover for holding midfielder Fernandinho (Sky Sports), but instead the Brazilian ended up at Manchester United in a deal worth a reported £52 million (Telegraph).

The former Shakthar Dontesk man has immediately slotted into United’s first-team eleven, but his performances thus far haven’t been too convincing with his latest against Brighton a real disappointment.

Taking to Twitter, several City fans feel they’ve dodged a bullet by not bringing him to the Etihad and likened the situation to Alexis Sanchez where they also saw a reported target head to United and subsequently struggle.

Fred lined up in United’s midfield alongside Andreas Pereira and World Cup winner Paul Pogba, yet the trio struggled to get going and often found themselves out-muscled by a physical Brighton side.

The Seagulls raced into a two-goal lead in the opening period through Glenn Murray and Shane Duffy, with defenders Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof committing basic errors.

Romelu Lukaku pulled one back for the Red Devils, yet Jose Mourinho’s men hit the self-destruction button again as they needlessly gave a penalty away allowing Pascal Gross to restore Brighton’s two-goal lead.

A last-minute penalty by Pogba wasn’t enough to rescue a point for United, leaving Mourinho to mull over his side’s indecisive performance and question how he can get the best out of his new midfielder Fred.

The 25-year-old saw plenty of the ball but did little with it. From a defensive perspective he managed to make just one interception while committing more fouls (three) and successful tackles (zero) according to Whoscored.
