Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal tried to sign Joao Cancelo from Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the summer transfer window, according to a report.

According to Football Transfers, Arsenal were interested in signing Joao Cancelo from Premier League rivals Manchester City.

The report has claimed that Arsenal wanted to bring Cancelo to the Emirates Stadium after Jurrien Timber got injured.

The Gunners reportedly made an approach to City, who won the Premier League, the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League last season, for the full-back.

Manchester City did not want to sell Joao Cancelo to Arsenal

The Portugal international himself was open to a move to Arsenal, but City did not want to send him to the North London club, according to the report.

Cancelo, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Bayern Munich from City, joined Barcelona on loan in the summer transfer window.

“Arsenal also made an approach to sign Manchester City defender Cancelo, but Pep Guardiola’s side simply wouldn’t sell or loan the player to Arsenal even though the Portuguese defender was open to joining his former coach, Mikel Arteta,” states Football Transfers.

And we are not surprised.

After all, City will be fully aware of how Arsenal got better after they signed Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko from them in the summer of 2022.

The Gunners almost won the Premier League title last season.

While City manager Pep Guardiola may not need Cancelo anymore, the £180,000-a-week (SalarySport) star is still a very good full-back and is at the top of his game at the moment.

We believe that Cancelo would have made Arsenal better and stronger.
