Tottenham are now said to have made Xabi Alonso their No.1 target as the hunt to replace Antonio Conte goes on.
Spurs have been linked with names such as Julian Nagelsmann, Arne Slot and Vincent Kompany ever since sacking the Italian back in March.
Now – however – a fresh candidate has emerged in Alonso.
What’s the story?
Well – according to De Telegraaf – the Spaniard is now Daniel Levy‘s first choice to replace Alonso.
The Dutch news outlet claim that the 41-year-old has now moved ahead of Slot on Tottenham‘s shortlist of managerial options.
Alonso only became a manager in senior football back in October when Bayer Leverkusen offered him the chance to step into the dugout, despite having no prior managerial experience aside from a spell in charge of Real Sociedad’s B team.
However, he has taken to it like a duck to water.

Alonso took over when Bayer Leverkusen were 17th in the Bundesliga before transforming the German outfit’s season.
Now, they find themselves sixth in the Bundesliga and are also in the UEFA Europa League Semi-Final, where Roma and José Mourinho await.
It has been quite the turnaround under Alonso, and you can see why Tottenham have sat up to take notice.
In total, the Spaniard has won 57 games in management across 129 outings in his spells at Real Sociedad’s B team and Bayer Leverkusen.
Xabi Alonso should reject Tottenham
While we think Alonso would be a solid appointment by Spurs, we believe the Spaniard should wait until he takes on a role like this.
The Basque-born tactician is still in the infancy of his managerial career, and we feel he should continue learning his trade at Bayer Leverkusen before he takes on another task.
After all, taking the reins at Tottenham right now would not represent an easy job, and it could ruin Alonso’s career in management before it has even properly started.
Nevertheless, Alonso has already saved one sinking ship in Bayer Leverkusen, so anything could happen this summer.
