Arsenal legend Tony Adams has written in The Sun that Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane should not be the England captain, West Ham United midfielder star Declan Rice should.
The former Arsenal and England star has said that while Kane is a brilliant player, Three Lions head coach Gareth Southgate should strip off the Tottenham captain of the captaincy and replace him with West Ham ace Rice.
Adams has noted that if Kane is not having a good game for England, then Southgate would find it hard to take him off because he is the captain.
Both Kane and Rice are part of the England squad for the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar.
Tony Adams on Tottenham and England striker Harry Kane
The pundit wrote: “Harry Kane is a great player, a top goalscorer, commands total respect from his team-mates and is rightly the first name on the England teamsheet.
“So far, so good, but I have my reservations about him as captain. It’s not because I doubt his abilities as a leader but if Gareth Southgate ever needs to change things he cannot take Harry off.
“All strikers have a bad day occasionally, even Harry, but nothing looks worse to the rest of the team than if the skipper is subbed.

“You look across to the bench, see your leader sitting there and it sends a bad message. Consequently Harry stays on when it might be detrimental to the team. Ok, that might not be very often, but it does happen.”
Adams added: “Personally, I’d have given the captaincy to Declan Rice. I love his character, he had a fantastic Euros, and you know he’s going to give you 90 minutes. Don’t forget the last time we won it we had a West Ham captain so it makes perfect sense!”
Not in agreement
We do not agree with Tony Adams’s assertion about Tottenham Hotspur and England international striker Harry Kane.
Kane is the England captain and he leads by example.
We see that all the time.
The striker is a senior figure in the Three Lions’ set-up and is hugely experienced.
And he is very mature as well.
Yes, if Kane does not play well, then he will have to come off, but we do not think that the striker will have any issue if Southgate decides to replace him with someone else during a game.
