Tottenham Hotspur head coach Jose Mourinho has told Football.London that he does not want to sell Serge Aurier, amid reported interest from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Mourinho has said that although Tottenham have signed Matt Doherty from Premier League rivals Wolves in the summer transfer window, it does not mean that the North London outfit are looking to cash in on right-back Aurier.

According to The Sun on Sunday (print edition, page 61, September 6, 2020), Wolves are interested in signing Aurier from Tottenham in the summer transfer window and are ready to make a bid (click here to read more).

The Daily Star reported in August that the former Paris Saint-Germain man had turned down a move to Wolves as part of the Doherty deal, but it seems that the Wanderers are still keen on him.

Mourinho told Football.London about Aurier: “When we bought Matt it was not to sell Serge. When we got Matt it was to strengthen the squad and to have more options.

“It was not to be in a very difficult situation like last season where Serge was playing all the time, and even in the worst possible circumstances when he had that very sad situation in his family. Even then he had to play and made that incredible effort to play.

“So for me it is not to buy one to sell another one, but of course the market is open and the players have the right to express themselves and to try to be happy and if one day Serge comes to us and a situation that he would prefer I think we would speak with him.

“Mr Levy would speak with him, but the reason why we got Doherty was to improve the squad and not to sell Serge. If you ask me directly journalist to coach do you want to sell? No I don’t.”

Blow for Wolverhampton Wanderers?

Mourinho’s aforementioned comments suggest that he wants to keep Aurier in his team, and that Tottenham will only sell the former PSG star if he wants to go.

Wolves could do with a new right-back following the departure of Doherty, and while Aurier is not exactly a great player and has made mistakes from time to time defensively, he is a capable footballer who could flourish under Wanderers manager Nuno at right wing-back.
