Carlos Corberan has continued to excel in his role as Huddersfield Town manager amid reports that he could end up replacing Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds United. He won the Championship Manager of the Week award.
Corberan, 38, spent three years at Leeds as Under-23’s manager and part of Bielsa’s coaching staff before taking over at Championship side and Yorkshire neighbours Huddersfield in the summer of 2020.
He kept the Terriers in the Championship despite a lack of funding. This season, his players have really bought into his methods – which includes copying Bielsa’s training-ground tactic used at Leeds, known as murderball.
The Telegraph claim that Corberan is one of three names being linked with the Elland Road job – along with Jesse Marsch and Ernesto Valverde. As Leeds lost 6-0 to Liverpool, Corberan secured another win on Wednesday.
Having beaten league leaders Fulham on the weekend, Huddersfield then beat Cardiff – scoring goals on 88 and 96 minutes to win 2-1, going 16 games unbeaten. Sitting in fourth, Corberan was named manager of the week.
Corberan gets MOTW award: Should Leeds take a look at Terriers boss?
While he is inexperienced in terms of English football and the Premier League, Corberan has always been ear-marked as a potential replacement for Bielsa. After the 6-0 loss to Liverpool, many want Bielsa gone.
He is expected to remain until the summer but the chances of Bielsa signing a new deal look unlikely. Corberan has worked at Leeds. After working under Bielsa, he knows the squad and what to do to get the best out of him.
